A great wood and apple head carving by Shep Shapiro. The sculpture measures about 8.0" tall and about 4" x 5" at its farthest points. I don't know if the eyes and red lips were done by Shep or added later by someone else. Great overall condition.
I found this about his hin && s art: "He developed it on a very sophisticated level," his wife, Rona, who worked with him, said. "It all started accidentally when he was visiting his mother in the hospital. He carved a face in an apple and it was very good. He subsequently perfected a technique using an epoxy resin coating that has continued to preserve many of them for more than 25 years."
The faces he made were sold through Marshall Field & Co., C.D. Peacock & Co. and Alfred Dunhill as well as outlets in Amsterdam and Milan, Italy,
Shep passed away in 1993 at the age of 70.
